A Perfect Nova Scotia Getaway: Harbours, Cruises, and Family Time

This summer, I had the joy of spending a vacation in Nova Scotia—a place that never fails to fill my heart with adventure, beauty, and that warm Maritime charm. Every visit feels like discovering the province all over again, and this trip was no exception. From breathtaking coastal views at Baxter Harbour, to fresh lobster in Hall’s Harbour, to a lively boat cruise in Halifax, it was a mix of natural wonder, seaside fun, and cherished time with family and friends.

The Magic of Baxter Harbour

One of our first stops was Baxter Harbour, a hidden gem tucked along the Fundy Coast. The drive there alone is worth the trip—rolling hills, winding roads, and glimpses of the Bay of Fundy teasing what’s ahead. But nothing prepares you for that first moment when the harbour opens up before you, framed by dramatic cliffs and crashing waves.

We arrived in time for low tide, which meant plenty of beach to explore. Baxter Harbour is famous for its waterfall that tumbles right onto the beach, and although this is truly something you have to see in person, one the day we were there, the fall was a dried up trickle of water, likely due to the very hot dry summer we were experiencing. The day was excellent for beach combing and photos!

For anyone road-tripping through Nova Scotia, this spot is a must-see. It’s less crowded than some of the better-known destinations, yet every bit as spectacular.

A Classic Stop: Hall’s Harbour

No Nova Scotia vacation is complete without seafood, and Hall’s Harbour is one of the best places to experience it. Known for its picturesque fishing village and some of the freshest lobster you’ll ever taste, it’s the kind of place that perfectly blends tradition and charm.

We wandered along the harbour, watching fishing boats bob in the tide and admiring the weathered shacks that line the water. There’s something so grounding about places like Hall’s Harbour—it feels like stepping into a postcard, except you can smell the salt air and taste the ocean breeze.

Of course, we couldn’t leave without digging into a lobster dinner. Eating by the water, with butter dripping and laughter flowing, is one of those simple joys that just can’t be replicated anywhere else.

Halifax by Sea: A Boat Cruise Adventure

From the small harbours to the bustling city, our next highlight was a boat cruise in Halifax. If you’ve ever visited Halifax, you know its waterfront is alive with energy. Street performers, local shops, and the smell of fried clams or Beaver Tails fill the boardwalk. But to truly appreciate the city, you have to see it from the water.

We boarded our boat in the afternoon, and the view of Halifax from the harbour is unforgettable. The city skyline glimmered in the sun while lighthouses, forts, and islands passed by as we cruised along. There’s something about being on the water that slows everything down—you can just sit back, sip a drink, enjoy the live music, and take it all in.

Family, Friends, and the Heart of the Trip

As amazing as the scenery and activities were, the best part of the vacation was reconnecting with family and friends. Nova Scotia has a way of making gatherings feel extra special—whether it’s chatting on a deck while watching the sunset, sharing seafood feasts, or going for long drives together down scenic coastal roads.

Travel is always about the places you see, but it’s also about the people you’re with. My time in Nova Scotia this summer was full of laughter, stories, and hugs that made the trip more meaningful than any attraction could.
